Robert Buck, Jr. joined the Albright-Knox Art Gallery (A.K.A.G.) staff as assistant director in 1970. On July 1, 1973, he succeeded retiring director Gordon M. Smith. Buck's directorship of the Albright-Knox lasted exactly 10 years. During this time, he strengthened the Gallery's education programs and oversaw the publication of a major collection catalogue, Painting and Sculpture, from Antiquity to 1942 (1979). His term also included a considerable expansion in Buffalo Fine Arts Academy (B.F.A.A.) membership, and funding of programs by state and federal agencies, particularly, New York State Council on the Arts (N.Y.S.C.A.) and the National Endowment for the Arts (N.E.A.). Corporate membership and contributions also grew, providing an alternate source of revenue. These gains were precipitated by the 1976 Erie County Cultural Funding Crisis, which threatened absolute curtailment of the County's annual appropriation. Prior to this serious problem, the City of Buffalo's annual appropriation was challenged before the Common Council by the anti-Gallery, local artists lobby centered around local artist Larry Griffis. This dispute occured in 1974 with artists seeking increased representation in the Academy's art collection, and in exhibitions at the Gallery. Through all this, Buck was steadfastly dedicated to an international rather than a regional vision of the museum's (and Buffalo's) future. From 1973 to 1983, the Gallery organized an average of three major, one-man exhibitions each year. Buck personally curated shows of artworks by Sam Francis, Richard Diebenkorn, Cleve Gray, Sonia Delaunay, and Fernand Leger. In 1978, the Diebenkorn exhibition was chosen to represent the United States at the 28th Venice Biennale. Buck himself was appointed a commissioner to the Biennale. Another major exhibition he organized was the 1979 Art For the Vice-President's House from Northeast Museums. During processing, considerable pleasant correspondence was found by Buck and Joan Adams Mondale.
In 1978, he was elected a trustee of the Association of Art Museum Directors (A.A.M.D.), an organization he served as secretary and as vice-president until 1982. Correspondence generated in this capacity documents the national funding crisis caused by reduced Government funding of the N.E.A. and the National Endowment for the Humanities (N.E.H.). Buck also served for a number of years on the New York Council for the Humanities, having been nominated in 1976. [Substantial records from this source were found, although extraneous records of the Council's decisions on grant applications were discarded as they lacked significance for the history of the Gallery, nor were they of legal or informational value. It was presumed, as with the minutes of such organizations as the A.A.M.D., that such records would be better retained in the archives of their institution of origin where they would be more complete and readily accessible.] Buck served on a variety of other local, state, and national committees and arts commissions which are also documented here. From the standpoint of local art history, the most interesting of these is the Mayor's Committee on Sculpture, which Buck served on in an advisory capacity.
Robert Buck resigned effective July 1, 1983 in order to assume the position of director of the Brooklyn Museum.
Record Group 2, Series 9 (AK2.9) consists of the museum administrative records and correspondence of Robert Treat Buck. The papers, received in the Archives through 1984, fall into three distinct time spans, noted above. Arrangement within these periods is alphabetical. The first time span, 1973-1974, includes considerable correspondence of Buck's predecessor, Gordon M. Smith, and also of Smith's other protégés, James N. Wood, and later, of Stephen N. Nash. In this seriees, there is little correspondence of Buck in the final two years of his tenure, 1982-1983, indicating that this later material is now included with the office administrative records of Douglas G. Schultz, Buck's eventual successor as director of the Albright-Knox.
The overall collection arrangement is considerably different than that encountered in previous series within other Director records. Robert Buck's administrative records could not be divided into individual annual accumulations without seriously disturbing the existing order of the papers. Further, the use of alphabetic general correspondence folders ("A," "B" , etc.) was diminished. Subject folders were substituted in an alphabetical arrangement. These typically contained several years of correspondence with a particular institution, or on a particular subject. One major difference over previous filing systems, was the filing of correspondence with museums by name of institution, rather than by city of origin. There were a number of other minor deviations of a similar nature which can be noted from a casual comparison of folder listings.
Volume before processing was approximately 25 linear feet. After processing, volume was reduced to 16 linear feet. In addition to records duplicated in other series and record groups in the Archives, the most frequently discarded records were minutes of meetings of outside organizations, such as the Association of Art Museum Directors, and minutes of meetings of the New York Council for the Humanities. Such minutes were retained only when they clearly documented direct participation by Director Buck. Not included in this series are Buck's exhibition papers, many of which are of considerable significance, and include many letters from prominent artists. These will be found with other curatorial records in Record Group 3. Photographs of archival interest were removed, cross-referenced, and included with the Archives' photograph collection, Record Group 6, Series 1 (AK 6.1).
Artist letters found during processing include Carl Andre, Cleve Gray, Beverly Pepper, Marisol, Diebenkorn, George Segal, Chryssa, and Jean Dubuffet. This is a partial listing. Other letters of autograph value include many from state and national political figures.
This collection is arranged in four series: 1973, 1974, 1975-1979, and 1979-1983.
