Although the artists in Fresh: Abstraction, vary in intention, level of abstraction, and use of material, most begin with formal abstraction as a language to co-opt and manipulate for their own purposes. Recognizable objects and subjects creep in. Theoretical and cultural concerns are voiced in these works, which deal with such issues as painting’s continued validity, globalization, sexism, and racism. Visual pleasure also becomes a tool for many of these artists, rather than only an end in itself – a strategy to keep the viewer looking and thinking.
