“Fresh” also describes the character of many of the Gallery’s most recent acquisitions. They challenge authority in a playful half-teasing, half-mocking way. The works “get fresh” with established modes of art making and with the audience; they are rebellious, yet not always confrontational. They share the collective mission to enliven and reinvent traditional ways of making and thinking about art. It has been the project of modern and contemporary art to continually renew and challenge the art that preceded it. Yet, the modernist model of the avant-garde, a new “ism” to replace the previous “ism,” has become outdated. Now, artistic modes overlap and ideologies and techniques are employed to fit the particular needs of individual artists. Like contemporary architecture, music, cuisine, and fashion, new hybrids are created. They reflect an era in which boundaries have become increasingly porous and unlikely combinations have become standard in all media and disciplines.
