Rather than showcasing the works in this exhibition in conventional ways – chronologically, by nationality, or by medium – they are arranged by theme. The use of familiar categories – space, abstraction, figure, representation, landscape, and memory – serves to highlight the way these conventional genres, styles, and themes have been reinterpreted. The categories selected for the exhibition are provisional; many of the works included in the exhibition could easily fit into more than one of these categories. Nonetheless, the six categories allow a “fresh” entry into works that one might have previously considered in another way. The categories might mean one thing to a viewer before they enter the room, and something altogether different afterwards. Groupings encourage viewers to find commonalties and understandings that might not have occurred before.
