Per Kirkeby's work is abstract in style, while his interest in the land is geological. The process of putting one color atop another creates patterns that mimic the slow addition of water atop soil, atop rock; his paintings, such as Holz IV (Wood IV), 1994, are built up in layers, imitating the earth’s structure.
