Nikki S. Lee and Philip-Lorca di Corcia represent images that appear truthful, yet upon closer inspection reveal their artifice. Both adopt the tradition of street photography and the conventions of casual snapshots to lend “authenticity” to their images. While Lee’s images materialize from genuine situations, they are ones that she has inserted herself in after taking on the clothes, make-up, stance, and other attributes of various American subcultures. By playing with her own “look,” Lee suggests that perhaps each of us has many and that there is no one true representation of the self. Di Corcia brings studio lights to Times Square in New York, 1998, so that the real life of the sidewalk traffic takes on the same theatricality as the billboards above. Both artists suggest that truth as much as fiction can be found equally in everyday life and media.
