In Callum Innes's Exposed Painting Ivory Black, Yellow Oxide, 2000, the thickly painted black square within the white background compartmentalizes the canvas. The ebony area also functions to convey a third dimension, giving the illusion of a deeply recessed void. In addition, Innes conveys a sense of time, which is essential to an individuals experience of space. He layers the passage of time into the work by showing traces of the removal of half of the paint with turpentine. In doing so, Innes has turned the visual into the phenomenological in the most minimalist terms.
