Primarily an installation artist concerned with the role natural spaces play in society, Olafur Eliasson, in his The Cave Series, Looking Out, 1998, gathers together forty-nine images of caves taken, in his familial homeland of Iceland. These images taken from the interior of caves looking out, extend his interest in experiencing nature, because they capture as much his experience of being in them, as they picture the size of the openings of these internal crevices and the landscape beyond. The photographs are not isolated works. They become Eliasson’s research for future projects in which he recreates a range of natural phenomenon, such as rainbows, geysers, and cloudcover, in the built environment (often museums).
