Works by Robert Longo and Candida Höfer, which document cultural history, rather than environmental history, provide a contrast to Barths perception of space. Longo's drawing, Untitled (open door, consulting room to study 1938), 2000, represents the entrance to Sigmund Freuds historic study in Vienna and references the dark, unknown world of the subconscious. Höfers work captures the feelings and ideologies conveyed by contemporary interiors. In Festspielhaus Hellerau I, 2000, the entrance to a museum in the former East Germany (Dresden) conveys, as a result of its stark character, both possibility and alienation. These spaces one reflecting the turn of the twentieth century and the other turn of the twenty-first century create completely different sensory experiences analogous to the cultural climate of each era.
