Alex Katz: The Complete Woodcuts and Linocuts 1951-2001
September 28, 2002 - January 5, 2003

Alex Katz: The Complete Woodcuts and Linocuts 1951-2001 was devoted exclusively to the forty-two woodcuts and thirty-six linocuts, which Katz has produced since 1951. While Katz has established himself as one of the leading American painters of the twentieth century, his woodcuts and linocuts are the perfect medium to explore his fascination with appearance, perception, and representation. While simple, bold, and colorful, his compositions reveal a wide range of emotional ambivalence and psychological complexity. His three main genres, landscape, individual portraits, and group portraits were included. The exhibition was organized and circulated by Peter Blum Gallery, New York and accompanied by a fully illustrated publication documenting the work. All works were courtesy Colby College Museum of Art, gift of the artist. At the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, this exhibition was organized by Associate Curator Claire Schneider.
