Resources on Artists’ Books from The G. Robert Strauss, Jr. Memorial Library

What is an artist’s book? Definitions have been offered by scholars, artists, and craftspeople. An artist’s book is sometimes a published book with multiple copies. It can also be a unique object. It is most often made of, or printed on, paper but can also be constructed with other materials. It can be bound, as a traditional book, or in the form of an accordion, a group of separate leaves, a three-dimensional structure, and so on. The medium is as varied and rich as any in visual art.

The G. Robert Strauss, Jr. Memorial Library has a collection of over 500 artists’ books, a few of which are on display in the current exhibition. To see the list of artists’ books in the collection, go to AKat, the library’s online catalog http://akat.albrightknox.org, select the “Advanced Search” tab and search for the term “Artists’ Books” in the “local call number” field in the drop-down menu. If there is an artist’s book you are interested in viewing, please ask for assistance at the circulation desk in the library.
