Georgia O'Keeffe and New Mexico: A Sense of Place

Georgia O’Keeffe and New Mexico: A Sense of Place organized by the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum, Santa Fe, New Mexico, was the first exhibition to present Georgia O’Keeffe’s paintings in conjunction with recent photographs of the actual locations that inspired a number of the works in this exhibition. The juxtaposition of the paintings with photographs sheds a new light on her representational style; one deeply committed to abstraction but somehow also true to the color, form, and sublimity of the New Mexico landscape. Her abstract and representational works are inextricably linked, always informing one another to create her distinctive, sumptuous aesthetic. The paintings in the exhibition are dated from 1929 through the early 1950s. O’Keeffe first visited Santa Fe in 1917 and eventually made her home there in 1949, shortly after the death of her husband Alfred Stieglitz.

The Albright-Knox Art Gallery was proud to be the final venue for this unique exhibition of works by Georgia O’Keeffe. The Gallery remains dedicated to collecting and exhibiting Modern works, with stellar holdings from O’Keeffe’s contemporaries including Arthur Dove, Marsden Hartley, John Marin, Alfred Stieglitz, and Max Weber.
