Opening Celebration
Friday, July 21, 3 – 10 P.M., with Curator’s
Talk at 8 P.M.
Special arrangements for this evening were provided by the Members’ Council
of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
Chuck Close is one of the most renowned and prolific American painters
of the twenty-first century. He continues to develop a distinct body
of work, one that pushes representation to its limits and perpetually
reinvents portraiture (a genre often under-recognized in contemporary
art). This exhibition comprised seventy artworks, exclusively self-portraits
(several of which are on view to the public for the first time), and
provided a fascinating glimpse into the artist’s self-examination
throughout the past forty years.
The exhibition was organized by the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis,
and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
Support for the exhibition was provided by the global financial
services firm UBS, the Evelyn D. Haas Exhibition Fund, the National Endowment
for the Arts, and Margaret and Angus Wurtele.
The presentation of the exhibition in Western New York was made possible
