The Museum Internship Program periodically offers opportunities in addition to the academic year and summer internships. These internships are for an extended period of time and are focused on a specific project.

Art Cataloging Internship 2013–2014

 
Background
In August 2010, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery began an ongoing effort to enhance the information collected and stored in the museum’s computerized collection records database. Now in its third year, the project is designed to increase intellectual access to the museum’s art collection by enhancing the art object and biographical records in the database to meet the needs of museum staff, scholars, students, and the general public.

Description of Internship Position
This academic-year internship will run for thirty-six weeks from September 2013 through May 2014. The intern must complete eight hours a week.

Under the direct supervision of the Art Cataloger, the intern will provide support to enhance the cataloging of art objects, with an emphasis on the painting and sculpture collections in MIMSY XG, the museum’s collection information management system.

The art cataloging intern will be responsible for enhancing and creating people/organization and place records in accordance with recognized, museum community–wide standards and best practices, including Cataloging Cultural Objects (CCO) and the Getty vocabularies (AAT, ULAN, TGN). This is an ideal role for a highly detailed person with an interest in cataloging and metadata.

Responsibilities:

  • Enhance, revise, and/or create people and place records in the MIMSY XG database
  • Perform research, as needed, to address lacks and inconsistencies in records (e.g. verify birth and death dates, forms of name)
  • Support the work of the Cataloger and Associate Cataloger in ensuring compliance with protocols and standards for data entry into MIMSY XG

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate or graduate student in art history, information studies, or related field, or recent graduate with Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in art history, information studies, or related field
  • Coursework in library cataloging/metadata desirable
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Attention to detail
  • Familiarity with print and online research resources
  • Proficiency in the use of computers
  • Reading knowledge of one language in addition to English preferred

FINE ART COLLECTION DOCUMENTATION INTERNSHIP 20132014

 
Description of Internship Position
This academic-year internship will run for thirty-six weeks from September 2013 through May 2014. The intern must complete eight hours a week. 

To date, the Registrar’s Office manages approximately 6,000 document files for the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s Fine Art Collection. These files contain all pertinent information for a work of art, including research materials, correspondence, and condition records.

Under the direction of the Senior Registrar for the Collection, the intern will be expected to assess, re-house into archival folders, and organize the existing files in a consistent manner. The categories for organization will be determined by the Senior Registrar for the Collection. These files are an invaluable resource and are utilized on a daily basis. It is expected that this project will result in significant progress in the Gallery’s management of these files. This project will enable Gallery staff, scholars, and students to have greater access to these materials and will ensure proper housing for archival stability.

Qualifications:

  • Current undergraduate student or graduate student in art history, information studies, or related field; or recent graduate (within one year of graduation) with Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in art history, information studies, or related field
  • Experience in a cataloging or technical services department desirable
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work independently
  • Attention to detail
  • Discretion
