    • Three Ways to Make a Scene

      For Grades 4–12

      Featuring André Derain's The Trees, ca. 1906; Stuart Davis's New York Waterfront, 1938; and Giorgio de Chirico's The Anguish of Departure, 1913–14
      Students will become familiar with the artists André Derain, Stuart Davis, and Giorgio de Chirico, explore three techniques for creating a landscape, and create a collage inspired by one of three works from the Gallery’s Collection.

      This lesson plan explores how Joan Miró, one of the artists in the 1920s and 1930s who became known as the Surrealists, used dreams and the unconscious to create his whimsical, playful painting known as Carnival of Harlequin. It includes hands-on activities and discussion to encourage students to create their own imaginary creatures.

      Students will learn about some of the tasks involved in selecting and presenting works for an art exhibition, curate their own exhibition using a work in the special exhibition Surveyor as inspiration, and more.
