Dispatcher/Control Room Officer
The Dispatcher/Control Room Operator reports directly to the Head of Security and Safety Services and Assistant
- Answers telephone calls and logs calls for service.
- Performs roll call of security personnel, dispatches officers, and responds to requests for assistance.
- Distributes and receives keys, responds to staff requests (for example, accident/injury forms), and announces guest arrivals to staff.
- Through the use of a computer workstation, monitors and operates video surveillance, recording components, computerized alarm monitoring equipment, stand-alone alarm panels, and telephonic alarm systems.
- Intervenes where persons are observed on video monitors engaging in conduct determined to be in violation of the Gallery’s security and safety policies.
- Dispatches patrol officers and supervisors as deemed necessary based on inappropriate behavior or alarm notification, maintaining communication with the patrol officers and supervisors until cleared.
- Maintains shift-activity logs and documents dispatches of patrol officers and supervisors.
- May be assigned to do patrol or fixed-post functions in the case of emergencies or special events, and act as shift supervisor when necessary.
Required Qualifications
- Must be able to effectively perform the above-described duties and responsibilities in a professional manner, with an emphasis on hospitality and courtesy.
- Must possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position.
- Ability to develop a good working knowledge of operating policies and procedures pertinent to the above-described duties and responsibilities.
- Ability to carry out duties promptly and exercise good judgment, responding when necessary to security officers’ reports (oral and written) of violations of Gallery security policies and procedures and life safety hazards, and referring such reports to staff responsible for remedial action or, when necessary, initiating immediate remedial action.
- Ability to promptly respond to customer calls for services, complaints, and concerns, or ensuring that the response by officers under the Dispatcher/Control Room Officer’s supervision is prompt and effective.
- Ability to communicate effectively and courteously with the department’s dual customer base (Gallery staff and patrons), and ensuring that officers under the Dispatcher/Control Room Officer’s supervision do the same.
- Ability to exercise appropriate decision-making discretion.
- Neatly groomed appearance and ability to maintain a proper uniform and a clean and orderly workspace at all times.
- Ability to provide field-level training (coaching) to officers, as necessary.
EDUCATION AND WORK EXPERIENCE
- A high school diploma or equivalency certificate is required. College is preferred.
- Must be at least eighteen years of age.
- Registration in accordance with the New York State Security Guard Act of 1992 is preferred, but will train.
