The Gallery seeks a Head of Publications who will be a key partner in fortifying the institution’s strategic growth by maintaining the highest possible standards in all internal and external communications, both in printed and electronic form. The head of the department takes on primary responsibility for establishing and maintaining the Gallery’s overarching graphic identity, style, and design presence as well as watching over the written word in every publication. This position is responsible for global oversight and hands-on work in connection with all communications: managing – both editorial and in production – catalogue projects and all ancillary published projects with curators; securing and negotiating contracts with guest authors, translators, designers, national and international publishers, and printers; website presence; quarterly journal-style calendar, exhibition labels, signage, ephemera. The head of the department also works closely with all department heads and staff to ensure institutional standards, and especially with the Director of Marketing in managing institutional messages, serves on the Department Head team, and reports directly to the Deputy Director.
A Master’s degree in Art History (preferable) or English is required, with working knowledge of foreign languages (i.e. French, Italian, German, Spanish).. Eight to ten years of experience in publications in a museum environment, with at least five years of experience in management. Experience in trade publishing a plus. A solid understanding of art history, museum practice, communications, editorial, design, and printing/production processes a must.
