Join us for our Nickel City Poetry Slam series, the evening begins with a performance by nationally recognized slam poet Tom Noy, bringing a fresh flow of entertaining thought-provoking words of inspiration. Afterwards, the hottest local spoken word artists compete for a $25 cash prize and a chance to be on the first national Buffalo Poetry Slam Team, competing in Madison, Wisconsin in August 2008. Who will be the best? You be the judge!

Join us for the opening of the exhibition, Jennifer Steinkamp, featuring works on view from one of the most important and prolific female video and new media artists of our time. Steinkamp creates stunning 3-D installations that explore architectural space, motion, and human perception.

Art Activity: Matter at Hand

Explore the nature in art and the art of nature with family tours and art activities designed by the Gallery’s program for individuals with special needs, Matter at Hand.

Performance: Young Audiences Presents ‘The Great Garbage Concert’

Decode illusions in nature and catch the Great Garbage Concert, taking environmental education to its silliest.

Performance: Rince na Tiarna

Spring into the St. Patrick’s Day spirit with a performance by Rince Na Tiarna (Gaelic for 'Lord of the Dance'), a troupe of young Irish Stepdancers from Western New York. Rince Na Tiarna has become a leader among Irish dance schools nationwide, ranking sixth among the world’s best Stepdance programs in recent competitions. The high kicking, fast footed Buffalo sweethearts' were also guest performers on the Rosie O'Donnell Show.

Coffee House Sound: Ali Critelli

Buffalo native Ali Critelli is making her debut as a solo artist along side one of Western New York’s premiere guitarists Frank Grizanti. A veteran of musical theater, dance showcases, and singing competitions, Critelli dazzles audiences with her soul-filled vocals and bluesy rock sound. She most recently sang in the group Amungus, performing alongside fellow Buffalo artist Robby Takac of the Goo Goo Dolls.

Color, color, color! Whether celebrating the Holi festival of colors or the bursts of color in Jennifer Steinkamp’s 3-D installation art, come create your own kaleidoscope using your favorite colors and designs.

6 p.m.
Speaker: Jennifer Steinkamp

Coinciding with the opening of her solo exhibition, video and new media artist Jennifer Steinkamp comes to the Albright-Knox to speak. Steinkamp’s 3-D installations explore architectural space, motion, and the phenomenon of human perception. Associate Curator Holly Hughes writes, “Fusing abstract painting, computer animation, sound, and film, her unique approach and distinct imagery create an awe-inspiring experience that balances between the virtual and the real.”

Come celebrate Holi, the festival of colors and the celebration of spring with special seasonal dances, songs, customs, Bollywood films, and food from India.

Performance: Sitar Jamz

Get in the Holi groove with a performance by the Indian funk group, Sitar Jamz. Combining traditional Indian sounds with dance music, this psychedelic show is one you don’t want to miss!

On the last day of World War II in a small town somewhere in Poland, Polish exiles of war and the occupying Soviet forces confront the beginning of a new day and a new Poland. In this incendiary environment we find Home Army soldier Maciek Chelmicki, who has been ordered to assassinate an incoming commissar. But a mistake stalls his progress and leads him to Krystyna, a beautiful barmaid who gives him a glimpse of what his life could be. Gorgeously photographed and brilliantly performed, Ashes and Diamonds masterfully interweaves the fate of a nation with that of one man, resulting in one of the most important Polish films of all time.
