The String Trio of New York present a fun, educational and interactive workshop on many aspects of music using popular songs and jazz standards including the Flintstones Theme, the theme from JAWS and tunes by Thelonious Monk. Followed by a Question & Answer Session.

Lecture and Book Signing: Scott McCloud
Author of Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art (1994), Reinventing Comics: How Imagination and Technology Are Revolutionizing an Art Form (2000), and Making Comics: Storytelling Secrets of Comics, Manga, and Graphic Novels (2006) 1 hour slide-show presentation followed by a Q&A session and a book signing.

Concert
Now celebrating its 30th anniversary, the String Trio of New York has performed hundreds of concerts throughout North America, Europe, East Asia, India, the Middle East, and North Africa and has recorded 17 critically-acclaimed CDs. The Trio, a veritable institution of jazz and contemporary music, received the following accolade from The New York Times: “... as rhythmically alive, stylistically varied and consistently inventive as anything this listener has heard recently.”

Erik Seeman, Associate Professor, Department of History, continues a new, informal monthly series of lectures from cutting edge and emerging scholars. Organized in collaboration with University at Buffalo Humanities Institute and Riverrun, inc., cash bar.

Music in the Gallery: Highlighting Outstanding Buffalo State Music Student Melissa Steiger
In addition to being a senior at Buffalo State College, Miss Steiger is the music director of Holy Cross Lutheran Church in Farnham, NY, where she conducts both the senior and children’s choirs. Ivan Docenko will accompany her performance on the piano.
Miss Steiger will perform selections by Schubert, De Falla, Berlioz, Faure, Chausson, Sondheim and Eric Idol, accompanied on piano by Mr. Ivan Docenko. The selections have memorable melodies, both in the vocal and piano parts, showcasing the talents of both performers. The conversation between the voice and piano in the pieces will bring out the lovely and memorable melodic lines, making an enjoyable listening experience for any concert-goer.

Big Concert
Composer and trombonist Rafi Malkiel, originally from Israel, is an active musician in both the Jazz and Latin scenes in New York City. Leading his quintet, Rafi plays original compositions as well as unique arrangements fusing Jazz and Latin-American standards with Afro-Caribbean rhythms. The group was featured in 2005 in the outreach program of the 92 Street Y performing for young audiences totaling more than 4000.

Laura Tsaggaris
Pittsburgh native Laura Tsaggaris comes to Buffalo for a characteristically intimate solo musical performance. Tsaggaris's unique sound of acoustic guitar and story-telling lyrics have been compared to those of Aimee Mann, Ani DiFranco, and Alanis Morrisette - all major influences in her career.

Music in the Gallery: Aurora Boneberg.
Aurora Boneberg was born and raised in Buffalo, New York. With a talent for singing, she decided to pursue a musical career at an early age. Having just recently graduated from Buffalo State College with her B.A. in Music, Aurora spent the summer of 2008 participating in the Opera Program at the American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria.

Masquerade Ball Variety Show: Ghost Dance, Spontaneous seasonal theater, DJ Josh Brown and more
Sifu Chik Qadir Mason of Spiritwind, joined by Kelly Metcalfe and Angela Lopez kick off our outdoor extravaganza with his Ghost Dance, a martial art inspired performance of continuous movement and flow. Followed by spontaneous performances including the jagged jugglers, dancing demons and more, accompanied by DJ Josh Brown.
