Grammy Nominee Gregory Porter to Perform as Part of the 2011–2012 Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series
January 13, 2012
Buffalo, NY – Vocalist Gregory Porter, one of the fasting rising stars in the music world, will make his area debut as part of the 2011–2012 Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery on Sunday, January 29, at 3 pm in the Gallery’s Auditorium. A pre-concert film, An Evening with Nat King Cole, will be shown at 2 pm.
In the short fifteen months since Gregory Porter exploded onto the international music scene with his debut CD, Water, he has racked up a stream of accolades and awards. Porter’s Water garnered a “Best Jazz Vocal” Grammy nomination (a rare feat for a debut recording) and has been included on an international array of year-end “Best Of” lists. It was named the Debut Album of the Year in the Village Voice Critics’ Poll and the #1 Jazz Album of 2011 by UK’s Jazzwise magazine (the first time a vocal album has achieved this distinction). A native of San Diego, Porter attended college on a football scholarship until sidelined by a career-ending injury. Pursuing his love of singing, he landed in New York City, where his vocal work drew comparisons to jazz and soul legends like Nat King Cole, Lou Rawls, Curtis Mayfield, Bill Withers, and Marvin Gaye.
As his international reputation continues to grow, Porter will release his second album, Be Good (Motéma), on Februrary 14. Produced by Brian Bacchus (whose numerous credits include Norah Jones’s Come Away with Me), Be Good features Porter’s winning combination of “outstanding original songs, erudite lyrics and social comment, top drawer musicianship and improvisation, and a voice to die for” (Jazzwise). It also showcases his powerhouse working band: Chip Crawford on piano, Aaron James on bass, Emanuel Harrold on drums, and Yosuke Sato on alto sax.
