Robert Glasper Trio to Perform as Part of Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series
March 8, 2011
Buffalo, NY – The highly-acclaimed Robert Glasper Trio will make their first area appearance as part of the 2010–11 Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery on Sunday, March 20, at 3 pm, in the Gallery’s Auditorium. The concert will be preceded, at 2 pm, by the pre-concert conversation “The Future Is Now: Where Is Jazz Headed?” with series producer Bruce Eaton.
With a sound all his own, Blue Note recording artist and Grammy nominee Robert Glasper (www.robertglasper.com) is truly a jazz pianist for the twenty-first century, successfully blending the free flow of a classic trio with time-bending hip-hop rhythms. While drawing frequent comparisons to Herbie Hancock, Bill Evans, and a “21st century incarnation of Thelonious Monk” (Financial Times UK) for his work as a leader and as a sideman with Terence Blanchard and Christian McBride, Glasper has collaborated extensively with hip-hop and neo-soul icons like The Roots, J Dilla, Maxwell, Q-Tip, and Kanye West. The result is music that is “direct, forceful, inventive, and accessible without pandering” (New York). Hailing a recent performance, Britain’s Jazzwise magazine recounted: “Glasper’s unfurling way with melody and improvisational prowess set a mesmerising atmosphere . . . the band responding to a rapt audience with incredible levels of interactivity and dynamic drama.” Joining Glasper for this concert will be bassist Derrick Hodge and drummer Mark Colenberg.
Tickets are $25 for Albright-Knox Art Gallery Members and $29 for non-members, and can be purchased at the Gallery’s Admissions Desk or online at www.albrightknox.org. The remaining performance this season is the Pete Malinverni Trio with Lee Hudson and Elliot Zigmund on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 8 pm.
The Gallery’s restaurant, AK café, will be open for lunch prior to the Robert Glasper Trio concert, from noon to 3 pm. Reservations are required; please call 716.270.8223.
