Hot Club of Detroit to Kick Off the 2010–2011 Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series with a Celebration of Django Reinhardt

October 12, 2010

Buffalo, NY – Hot Club of Detroit will make their first area appearance as part of the 20102011 Hunt Real Estate Art of Jazz Series at the Albright-Knox Art Gallery on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at 8 pm in the Gallery’s Auditorium. A pre-concert film. Swing Guitar: The Genius of Django Reinhardt, begins at 7 pm in celebration of the gypsy jazz legend’s birthday centennial.

Seventy years after Django Reinhardt’s legendary Quintette du Hot Club de France featuring Stéphane Grappelli fused gypsy guitar with contemporary jazz, Hot Club of Detroit has added fresh influences—including Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Weather Report, and Chopin—to the classic “gypsy jazz” sound. The result: “something retro and new, European and American, familiar and very unique” (Kalamazoo Gazette). Led by the stirring fretwork of guitarist Evan Perri, with accordionist Julien Labro, saxophonist Carl Cafagna, guitarist Paul Brady, and bassist Andrew Kratzat, the group has been expanding musical horizons with each new recording for Mack Avenue Records and dazzling concert audiences from coast to coast. For more information about Hot Club of Detroit, visit www.hotclubofdetroit.com.

Tickets are $25 for Albright-Knox Art Gallery Members and $29 for non-members, and can be purchased at the Gallery’s Admissions Desk or online at www.albrightknox.org/artofjazz. The other performances this season are Charles Lloyd New Quartet on Sunday, January 30, 2011, at 4 pm, Robert Glasper Trio on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at 3 pm, and Pete Malinverni Trio on Saturday, May 7, 2011, at 8 pm.

The Gallery’s restaurant will be open for dinner prior to the concert on Saturday, November 6, 2010, with a prix-fixe menu catered by Oliver’s. For dinner reservations, please call Oliver’s at 716.877.9662.
