Clyfford Still Museum Winter Keynote
Clyfford Still and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery: A Conversation

The Albright-Knox is pleased to announce a special event taking place at the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, Colorado, that highlights the Albright-Knox’s significant collection of works by the artist (American, 1904–1980).

Clyfford Still’s relationship with the Albright-Knox Art Gallery began in the 1950s and continued until his death, culminating in his unprecedented gift of thirty-one paintings to the museum in 1964. This special event, hosted by the Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, Colorado, brings together two individuals who worked extensively with Still’s work at the Albright-Knox. Michael Auping, curator at the Albright-Knox from 1984 to 1993, co-organized the 1993 exhibition Clyfford Still: The Buffalo and San Francisco Collections—likely the first and last instance these two groups of works, carefully selected by Still, were brought together. In a discussion moderated by Clyfford Still Museum Director Dean Sobel, Auping, now chief curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, and Doug Dreishpoon, chief curator at the Albright-Knox, will share memories and anecdotes from their involvement with Still’s art and life. The discussion will take place at the Clyfford Still Museum on February 26, 2014, and will be simulcast via a link on the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s website.

Clyfford Still and the Albright-Knox Art Gallery: A Conversation is planned to complement the exhibition Modern Masters: 20th Century Icons from the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, which will be on view at the Denver Art Museum from March 2 to June 8, 2014.
