Tim Hailand’s Photographic Archive of the Production and Installation of Jim Hodges’ look and see, 2004

The gift of this major collection of photographs serves as an important visual record of the production and initial installation, at Battery Park City in Lower Manhattan, of this bold and powerful work, which now resides within the Gallery’s Sculpture Garden.

Jim Hodges's look and see, 2005, being lowered into the Gallery's Sculpture Garden.

With its highly polished, cut-out, and painted surface, this eleven-and-one-half-foot high, twisted plane of stainless steel plays hide-and-seek with Gallery visitors. Hodges focused on altering one’s perception of a familiar urban space, and with look and see, the warped, refractive metal, with its surprise openings and its camouflage patterning, creates an encounter with art that reshuffles our perception.

Born in Buffalo in 1965, Tim Hailand currently lives and works in New York City. His work has appeared in The New Yorker, Playgirl, Frieze, Artforum, W, and V magazines, and is also in the public collections of the Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Modern Art, and The Progressive Collection, as well as the private collections of Elton John, Rufus Wainwright, Isaac Mizrahi, Mario Testino, Tracy Chapman, Danielle Steele, Marc Shaiman, Scott Wittman, The Scissor Sisters, Vivienne Westwood, Stevie Nicks, Patti Lupone, and Justin Bond, to name only a few. With this generous gift, the Gallery is pleased to now be included in this prestigious list.
