After exploring the painting Carnival of the Harlequin by Joan Miro (1924-25), visitors further experienced the artwork by stepping into the Interactive Room. To enter the space, participants swung open a fur-covered, Miro-inspired door. Once inside, visitors talked to the harlequin using a tape recorder and listened to the recording. A xylophone was hidden inside the stomach of a cat from Miro's painting, and playful pillows were hidden inside an oversized dice box. Surprise elements pervaded the room. Boxes designed to look like eyes were filled with magnetized words which were used to create dada poetry on the walls. Velcro strips were attached to globe-like circles which spun, revealing colorful shapes. The entire space was designed to echo Carnival of Harlequin, which is part of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery's permanent collection. Attendance: 11,770 |
