Balance, by John Shoop of Creations at The Resource Center

Education Exhibition Hallway

The artworks in this exhibition highlight the talents and interests of a diverse community of people with disabilities. The works were created by artists who participated in the art-based programs of four local human services agencies (Aspire of Western New YorkPeople Inc.The Resource Center, and Starlight Studio and Art Gallery), as well as artists who participated in the Albright-Knox’s Access AK: Creative Connection program.

Access AK: Creative Connection is a year-round program at the Albright-Knox that enables and encourages individuals to express themselves both verbally and nonverbally in the art museum environment. Access AK: Creative Connection uses custom-designed tours followed by hands-on art workshops to meet the needs and interests of each participating group.

iXpress is Aspire of Western New York’s expressive arts program for people with Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disabilities. Originating as a visual arts program, today iXpress offers opportunities to create music, films, poetry, and more. Participants are led through an artistic process designed to fuel personal inspiration, improve communication skills, and develop a stronger sense of self.

People Inc.’s The Arts Experience is a day habilitation program for adults with developmental disabilities. The Arts Experience focuses on self-expression through the arts, from music, drama, visual art, and dance to creative writing and dance aerobics.

The Creations art program at The Resource Center enables artists to express what they cannot always say in words or actions. Artmaking through the Creations program provides an outlet for creative expression and enjoyment, while also developing skills and talents. Artists are able to blossom with confidence and self-esteem once talents are uncovered.

Starlight Studio and Art Gallery is a cooperative environment that supports adults with disabilities in their artistic development. Through technical assistance by professional artists, on-site and off-site exhibitions, and other opportunities for representation and sales, the Starlight artists hone their artistic interests, become stronger advocates, and become better-integrated citizens.

Admission to this exhibition is free on M&T FIRST FRIDAYS @ THE GALLERY
