1905 Building

Since 1977, when the Albright-Knox presented its first In Western New York biennial open-call exhibition, this series highlighted the work of numerous talented artists within the eight counties of Western New York. The format of the popular recurring exhibition afforded viewers a thorough examination of a variety of artists from the area. Curator Douglas Dreishpoon and Assistant Curator Claire Schneider organized the exhibition after reviewing more than 1,500 slides of works in a variety of media by more than 120 artists. The limited number of participants allowed for a presentation that was concentrated and in-depth. The results were an exhibition of the work of ten artists: James A. Allen, Terry Beebe, Xiaowen Chen, Tony Conrad, Katherine Hannigan, Robert Hirsch, Joshua R. Marks, Sharon McConnell, David Schirm, and Kurt Von Voetsch. A brochure, with black-and-white illustrations and a complete checklist of the works, accompanied the exhibition.

About the Western New York Exhibitions

The Western New York exhibitions acknowledge the breadth of talent in the art community of Western New York and reflect the Albright-Knox’s ongoing commitment to support the creative endeavors of these artists. Begun in 1934, the Western New York exhibitions bring together notable works of art in the region and provide a wider field of appreciation for area artists.

Painting, sculpture, prints, and works on paper have traditionally been included, with a category of photography added in 1951 and video and film in 1984. From 1977 to 2010, the Western New York exhibitions alternated with In Western New York and Beyond/In Western New York, invitational exhibitions with selections made by the museum’s curators.

This exhibition was organized by Curator Douglas Dreishpoon and Assistant Curator Claire Schneider.
