November 18, 2016

Fletcher Benton (American, born 1931). Folded Square Alphabet O, 1989. Steel and paint, 96 x 96 x 96 inches (243.8 x 243.8 x 243.8 cm). Collection Albright-Knox Art Gallery; Anonymous Gift, 2009 (2009:13). © 1989 Fletcher Benton/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York. Photograph by Tom Loonan.

By the early 1970s, Fletcher Benton became frustrated with the limitations of both paint on canvas and kinetic sculpture, so in response he started creating three-dimensional sculptures composed of traditional bronze and steel.

Fletcher Benton's Folded Square Alphabet O, 1989, was installed on the Albright-Knox's Elmwood Avenue lawn, as pictured here, from June 2009 to August 2012, while another artwork was being treated for conservation.
