Rewilding New York (Community Seed Stations),

Public Artwork Details

Jenny Kendler's ReWilding New York (Community Seed Stations) facilitated the dispersal of native wildflower seeds to residents throughout Buffalo and the surrounding region. The concept centered on the presentation of ten newsstand—or “honor”—boxes donated by The Buffalo News covered in a floral design created by the artist. Each box contained free packets of native wildflower seeds for the public to take and plant in their communities, helping revive our ecosystem with plant-life indigenous to the region and providing valuable food sources for adult Monarch butterflies and other pollinators.

A hardy variety of 11 wildflower species were available, provided by the Ontario-based Wildflower Farm, founded in 1988. Wildflower Farm operates a Buffalo-based warehouse and focuses on facilitating low-maintenance native wildflowers, specifically working with and circulating plants that require no watering, no fertilizing, and minimal annual maintenance.

ReWilding New York (Community Seed Stations) is one part of a two-fold work by Jenny Kendler that involves the community dispersal of milkweed and native wildflower seeds throughout Western New York. Learn more about the other part, Kendler's Milkweed Dispersal Balloons.
