Location: 1260 Hertel Avenue (Get Directions)
The work Buffalo-based graphic design firm White Bicycle developed for the west wall of 1260 Hertel Avenue is a dynamic take on a map of the area. At a distance, the word “WE” emerges—a symbolic gesture recognizing how the neighborhood is defined by the connections we make and that build character, strength, and resiliency in our region. The composition also harkens to the designs of East Aurora’s early-twentieth-century Roycroft community and the stained glass you might find in churches throughout the region.
Brian Grunert is the founder of the Buffalo-based graphic design firm White Bicycle. Grunert is a six-time nominee and one-time winner of the Best Record Package Grammy for his work with local musician Ani DiFranco. In addition to working with renowned musical artists such as DiFranco, Andrew Bird, and Erroll Garner, Grunert and White Bicycle have collaborated with a number of creative agencies, institutions, and artists such as 43 North, The Burchfield Penney Art Center, and Duayne Hatchett.
Grunert and his team are skilled and strategic designers keen on producing emotional experiences through layered and nuanced imagery. Designers are naturally adept at deploying visual strategies that grab and hold public attention, and White Bicycle is among the most adroit in the Western New York region at producing indelible imagery. Grunert has also lived along Hertel Avenue for over a decade and has personally witnessed the economic and cultural shifts that have taken place there over that time.
