AK Teens Speak Out Seminar

The art of public speaking is an essential tool for young adults in both their academic and future career pursuits. In this exciting, new two-session seminar, high school students in grades 9–12 will have the opportunity to learn public speaking techniques and the process for structuring presentations, and gain valuable experience preparing and presenting a five-minute talk focused on a work from the Collection of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.

In advance of the first Speak Out Seminar session, students will be sent a packet of reading materials about public speaking and a list of selected works from the Albright-Knox’s Collection, with images and summaries, to review. Students will come prepared to the first seminar session having read the materials and selected the work that they would like to talk about for their presentation. Seminar sessions will include a discussion of public speaking techniques and exercises, and a review of techniques on how to structure presentations. Students will also rehearse their presentations, with instructor and student feedback. Students will formally present their five-minute talk on a work from the Albright-Knox’s Collection to guests at the AK Teens Reception on Thursday, November 7, 2013, from 5:30 to 7:30 pm.

The AK Teens Speak Out Seminar will be led by Assistant Curator of Education Jessica DiPalma and Associate Curator of Education Nancy Spector. The second session will include guest instructor Jodi Johnston, Director, Corporate Media Relations, First Niagara Financial Group.


This program is limited to ten students. Registration and pre-payment is required. Refunds will not be given for missed sessions within the seminar. To register, please call 716.270.8292, or complete and mail the Registration Form. Confirmation of registration will be sent by email one week before class begins.

The deadline for registration is Friday, October 4, 2013.


A limited number of scholarships are available. They will be awarded to students (entering grades 9–12) who can demonstrate financial need. Financial need can be demonstrated by a reduced lunch form, a letter from a social service agency or clergy member, or another document indicating combined family income is $35,000 or below. Scholarships generously provided by First Niagara.
