Between 1993 and 2007, Anselm Kiefer transformed a former silk factory into a vast complex of living spaces, studios, workshops, and storage facilities, creating a new type of “land art” comprised of gigantic concrete structures in the midst of rural Barjac, France. The site became his most developed artwork known as “La Ribaute.” Because of the monumentality, environmental, and experiential qualities, and his use of multiple media, “La Ribaute” has been called Kiefer’s Gesamtkunstwerk: a total work of art. 

In this talk, presented in conjunction with the special exhibition Anselm Kiefer: Beyond Landscape, Dr. Matthew Biro, Professor and Chair of the Department of the History of Art at the University of Michigan, will examine “La Ribaute” and Kiefer’s artistic production since his move to France in 1993.
