In this three-part lecture series, Assistant Curator Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan will outline the history of modernist painting—from its emergence in the 1860s to its zenith in the 1940s and 1950s—as shaped by the work of Édouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock. This first lecture in the series will focus on Édouard Manet, whose scandalous paintings of the 1860s were a formative influence on the Impressionists and are typically cited as the inaugurators of modern art. We will explore Manet’s masterpieces, including Olympia, Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe, and A Bar at the Folies-Bergère, in order to understand their radicality and lasting impact on modernist painting.

About the Series

In this three-part lecture series, Assistant Curator Dr. Tina Rivers Ryan will outline the history of modernist painting—from its emergence in the 1860s to its zenith in the 1940s and 1950s—as shaped by the work of Édouard Manet, Pablo Picasso, and Jackson Pollock. Drawing on her experience teaching art history at institutions such as Columbia University and The Museum of Modern Art, Dr. Ryan will focus closely on the paintings themselves, helping both skeptics and devoted fans see these masterpieces—including ones in the Albright-Knox’s renowned collection—with fresh eyes.
