American Paintings of the 1970s featured fifty works by fifty artists, surveying the diverse painting styles and artistic trends of the 1970s.

After it closed in Buffalo, the exhibition traveled to the Newport Harbor Art Museum in Newport Beach, California; the Art Museum of South Texas in Corpus Christi; the Oakland Museum; and the Krannert Art Museum at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign.
