This exhibition featured compact surveys of several photographs living and working in the United States and in Europe, including Bernice Abbott (American, 1898–1991), Eugène Atget (French, 1857–1927), Margaret Bourke-White (American, 1904–1971), Walker Evans (American, 1903–1975), David Octavius Hill (Scottish, 1802–1870) and Robert Adamson (Scottish, 1821–1848), Man Ray (American, 1890–1976), László Moholy-Nagy (American, 1894–1946), Charles Sheeler (American, 1883–1965), Edward Steichen (American, 1879–1973), and Edward Weston (American photographer, 1886–1958). While almost all of the photographs included in the exhibition were loans, the prints by Hill and Adamson were part of the museum’s collection, having been acquired in 1911 out of the International Exhibition Pictorial Photography.
