Buffalo, NY – Recently the Albright-Knox Art Gallery in Buffalo, New York, and the Musée d’arts de Nantes, in France—both members of the non-profit organization FRAME (the French-American Museum Exchange)—announced a new initiative to highlight their respective collections of Op art.

New webpages on both museums’ websites introduce this historical movement from the 1960s and explain its importance to both French and American culture, as well as its influence on contemporary art. The websites include image galleries of artworks from both collections, as well as a new bilingual video featuring archival images, artworks, and interviews with curators from both institutions.

“Since it helped introduce Americans to Op art in the spring of 1965, the Albright-Knox has developed one of the best collections of Op art in the world,” said Tina Rivers Ryan, Assistant Curator, who appears in the video. “This collaboration with the Musée d’arts de Nantes, which is renowned for its collection of geometric abstraction, places our collections into dialogue in order to reframe Op art’s history and legacy.”
