The thin sliver of beach in the bottom left corner of this horizontally oriented canvas features a loosely painted scene of multiple Caucasian figures dressed for a summer’s outing. Two thin wooden piers extend horizontally into the ocean, filling most of bottom two-thirds of the canvas. A couple sailboats dot the horizon and a third boat is pulling up to the pier in the foreground. The sky filling the upper third of the canvas is light blue with lilac tinged clouds reflecting in the water below. — William James Glackens
