British, born 1980

On surfaces ranging from walls to found objects, sneakers, cars, and circuit boards, Shantell Martin has developed a language of characters, creatures, and messages that invites her viewers to share in her creative process. Infusing autobiography with dreamlike whimsy, Martin bridges drawing, performance art, technology, and everyday experience. Underlying her work is a quest for identity—her own, discovered and refined in the development of her characteristic style, and that of the viewer, engaged by Martin’s direct questioning and winding lines.
