Column Structure IX, 2006
Acrylic, graphite, and black pencil on canvas
96 x 120 inches (243.8 x 304.8 cm)
Collection Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Bequest of Arthur B. Michael, by exchange, 2007
Organized by Albright-Knox Chief Curator Douglas Dreishpoon, this exhibition honors the outstanding career of Robert Mangold, an artist whose native roots are in Buffalo and who has been a major figure in the investigation of geometric abstraction since the 1960s. Born in North Tonawanda, New York, in 1937, Mangold’s earliest visits to an art museum were to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery.
This nearly ten-year survey explores the development of the artist’s paintings and works on paper with his “Curled Figures,” “Columns,” “Column Structures,” and most recently his “Ring Images” series. Mangold’s monumental commission for the colored glass windows in Buffalo’s new United States Courthouse, scheduled to open in July 2010, will also be featured in the exhibition through architectural models, preliminary sketches, and photographs that document the building and the site. Designed by architect William Pedersen, the courthouse will connect Buffalo’s illustrious architectural past with its future.
SPECIAL OPPORTUNITY
In commemoration of the important exhibition ROBERT MANGOLD | Beyond the Line: Paintings and Project 2000–2008, the Albright-Knox Art Gallery, in association with Harry N. Abrams, Inc., has published a clothbound book that serves as both the exhibition catalogue and a document of the United States Courthouse commission. The book traces Mangold’s artistic roots and development, from his austere geometric paintings of the 1970s to his work on the Buffalo courthouse windows and the animated ring images he is creating today. Insightful essays by exhibition curator Douglas Dreishpoon; Marla Prather, senior consultant in the Department of Nineteenth-Century, Modern, and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art; and architect William Pedersen, along with an in-depth interview by Dreishpoon with the artist, afford an intimate look at his process.
The book is available in both a Collectors Edition and in a Museum Trade Edition.
