Captured: Art’scool Educators’ Workshop: Robert Therrien

September 26, 2013

On Thursday, September 19, educators enjoyed a night of artmaking and poetry writing connected to the Gallery’s exhibition Robert Therrien. The workshop was provided free through the Art’scool program, which is funded by BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York. Guests toured the exhibition while learning about the artist; discussed various multi-subject connections to use within their classrooms; sketched images inspired by Therrien’s works; used pencils, paint, and various other materials to create works inspired by their sketches; and created poems based on their works.

Here are some of the final poems and the works that inspired them:

Round Memories

Rounded shapes that roll backwards
Into recesses of my mind
Travel effortlessly into the past
But images are fleeting;
Thoughts are once again lost
In the present—the here—the now

Inquiry

An environment of learning
Encourages
Inquiry
Of
What ifs . . .
Viewing the possibilities
Exploring images,
Content, media,
And
Connections
Applying to make it
Their own.

Underneath

I am underneath
Looking up
What does it say?

I am small
Tell me
What does it mean?

I am growing
Can’t see . . .
Read it to me?

Orbs

Orbs . . .
          Circling the Universe
          Glowing
          Abstract
          Space . . .

Energy . . .
          Vibrating pulsating
          Electric life

Circle . . .
          Healing
          Heaven
Memory
Floating

A Triple Scoop

A triple scoop
Strawberry vanilla
Chocolate
A snowman
Who lost his hat
Who lost his scarf
Who lost his nose
Who lost his eyes
Who lost his smile

Frosty melted in
the greenhouse
After he took his
Human girlfriend
Inside so she
Wouldn’t die . . .
Of hypothermia
Frosty sacrificed himself to save
Her
I love Frosty
The snowman
