HOUSTON PERSON QUARTET
Sunday, October 30, 2011

“The Boss Tenor Tradition,” with saxophonist Kelly Bucheger
Concert, 3 pm

Saxophonist Houston Person wears the Boss Tenor crown in the tradition of jazz legends like Ben Webster, Gene Ammons, and Stanley Turrentine. A pioneer in the soul jazz movement of the 1960s (and an influence on Buffalo’s own Grover Washington, Jr.), Person has led a career that includes a storied thirty-year musical partnership with the late vocalist Etta Jones. A master of popular standards played with his trademark velvet-toned sound and bluesy, swinging feel, Person has released more than seventy-five albums as a leader.

With his first album, Water, having been nominated for a 2011 GRAMMY Award for Best Jazz Vocal Album and grabbing the top spot in the Village Voice Jazz Critics’ Poll for Best Debut of 2010, Gregory Porter has taken the music world by storm. “Porter may count (Nat King) Cole as his primary influence, but his vocals and his ability to spin a musical yarn call to mind . . . Joe Williams, Jon Hendricks, Lou Rawls, and Kevin Mahogany” (SoulTracks). This will be the first area performance by this rapidly ascending vocal star. (www.gregoryporter.com)

This rare North American appearance will include Rava’s Italian quintet, featuring the remarkable young trombonist Gianluca Petrella. (www.enricorava.com

Having apprenticed with the jazz legends Roy Haynes and Art Blakey, Harrison is now mentor to the next generation of New Orleans greats. (www.donaldharrison.com)
