Tickets for Rockin’ at the Knox on Sale This Monday

April 23, 2010

Buffalo, NY – Tickets for one of Buffalo’s biggest celebrations of music and art, Rockin’ at the Knox, will go on sale on Monday, April 26, at 10 am. This year, an eclectic lineup headed by Rufus Wainwright and The National, who will be joined by Atlas Sound and Martha Wainwright, will perform on Friday, June 18. Rockin’ at the Knox is the Albright-Knox Art Gallery’s outdoor fundraising celebration and one of the city’s most anticipated events.

“We are delighted with the lineup for this year’s event,” Gallery Director Louis Grachos said. “It is a packed program this year; doors will open at 5 and performances will begin at 5:30, so I urge everyone to arrive early to enjoy this massive celebration”.

Siblings Rufus and Martha Wainwright are the children of folk singers Loudon Wainwright III and Kate McGarrigle. Rufus has carved out his own singular sound in the worlds of rock, opera, theatre, dance, and film. Martha creates her own music with a compelling voice.

The National’s much-anticipated new album High Violet will be released worldwide on May 11. The High Violet album cover features a sculpture, The Binding Force, by artist Mark Fox, whose work the Gallery recently acquired for its Permanent Collection.

Rockin’ at the Knox will once again take place in the Gallery’s parking lot on Elmwood Avenue. The event, which began in 1995, was moved outside the Gallery to the parking lot in 2005 to accommodate larger crowds and a bigger, festival atmosphere. Since then, the event has grown significantly; this year a crowd of 5,000 people is expected to attend. Past performers at Rockin’ at the Knox include Wilco, My Morning Jacket, Blondie, the B-52s, Feist, and Elvis Costello. Costello has visited the Gallery several times since his headline performance in 2007.

Lead sponsorship for this year’s celebration is provided by Independent Health and M&T Bank. M&T Bank, one of the country’s most highly respected regional banks, has a long history of civic and charitable support in Western New York and has been a frequent partner of the Albright-Knox Art Gallery. Shelley C. Drake, President of the M&T Charitable Foundation said, “We are delighted to have the opportunity to present Rockin’ at the Knox again this year. M&T understands the importance of dynamic cultural organizations in the context of a thriving Western New York and we wish the Albright-Knox Art Gallery great success as we look forward to this fabulous community event.”

“At Independent Health, we’re pleased to be supporting the Albright-Knox Art Gallery and their signature event, Rockin’ at the Knox,” said Michael Cropp, M.D., President and Chief Executive Officer of Independent Health. “We believe support for cultural institutions like the Albright-Knox Art Gallery is important for ensuring our region remains a culturally vibrant community that provides a high quality of life for its residents. We are very excited to be a part of this exceptional evening of music and art.”
