About the Artwork

In partnership with the Hispanic Heritage Council, the Albright-Knox Public Art Initiative helped to identify Philadelphia-based artist Betsy Casañas to create a mural celebrating the cultural significance of the Latino and Hispanic communities of Buffalo's Niagara Street corridor. “Highlighting the positive aspects of Latino culture and heritage has always been part of our mission,” said Casimiro D. Rodriguez, Sr., President of the Hispanic Heritage Council. “This mural not only honors our history but will serve as an inspiration for our future. As an artist of Puerto Rican descent, Betsy brings tremendous insight and passion to the project.”

Casañas’s design for the mural was informed by a series of conversations with members of the community about the artistic content they felt would best represent their values, neighborhood, and their integral relation to the cultural diversity and social fabric of Buffalo as a whole.
