Education Exhibition Hallway

Starlight Studio and Art Gallery was inspired to learn of the Albright-Knox’s 2012–2013 Artist-in-Residence, Dennis Maher, and his exhibition House of Collective Repair, which will be on view January 26–May 12, 2013. The artists of Starlight Studio were especially intrigued by the buildings along the route that connects Maher’s home at 287 Fargo Avenue to the Albright-Knox Art Gallery at 1285 Elmwood Avenue. The artists Ricky Hogan and Noah Filk travelled this route with the teaching artist Lily Booth. Filk identified buildings along this 2.1-mile course that interested him and Hogan photographed them.

Working from the printed photos, Filk drew these structures on fabric in permanent marker. The drawings were then passed on to other artists in the studio to embellish as they chose. Many added embroidery, some added marker or applied fabric and other objects. A portrait of each house was made through this collective layering, as the work was passed from photographer to graphic artist to embellisher, mirroring the generations of change that have shaped our city.

Starlight Studio and Art Gallery, a program created by Learning Disabilities Association of Western New York, is an art studio and gallery located in downtown Buffalo that supports adults with disabilities in their artistic development.
