Organized by the Albright-Knox and the University at Buffalo Art Galleries in collaboration with the Millennium Art Museum, Beijing, The Wall: Reshaping Contemporary Chinese Art was at the time the largest exhibition of contemporary Chinese art to travel beyond China. It also marked the first collaboration between American art museums and a major Chinese art institution focusing on contemporary Chinese art.

The Wall featured the work of more than 50 Chinese artists working in a variety of mediums, from the traditional—such as painting, sculpture, and works on paper—to the contemporary—including video, installation, performance, and film. The Wall was an interdisciplinary cultural event that also included the publication of a bilingual catalogue, a film festival, educational programming, performance art, music, and dance programs.
